HOW TO USE EQ TO SHAPE YOUR MUSIC

At the most basic level, a musician controls three elements: pitch, time, and timbre. An engineer's job is to help (or sometimes second-guess) musicians in this quest. Although minute control over pitch and time has been within our grasp only in recent years, controlling timbre is a well-established part of engineering. Each time you choose a microphone or tweak a preamp, you're affecting the recorded timbre. The tool we most often think of for timbral processing, however, is the equali.

FIG. 1: A graphic equalizer divides the audio spectrum into 30 or 31 bands and provides clear, concise visual feedback of what has been cut or boosted.

An equalizer, or EQ, is a hardware or software signal processor that allows you to manipulate a sound's frequency spectrum. If you've ever used the tone controls on your home receiver or made a smiley face out of the sliders on the front of your car stereo, you know what EQ does — just enough to get you in trouble. In this column, we'll look at the various components of an equalizer, explore how they work, and describe how they can be applied to improve your sound.

EQ Pluribus Unum

To paraphrase the 18th-century French mathematician Joseph Fourier, any complex sound is made up of a number of different frequency components. Because this is true, we can change a sound's basic timbre by manipulating those components independently. That is the function of an equalizer: to amplify or decrease portions of the frequency spectrum. This is accomplished with filters (for a discussion of filter basics, see “Square One: Just Passing Through” in the February 2005 issue of EM, available online at www.ilhamnurulresources.blogspot.com As you may know, a filter is also an essential part of a synthesizer. Although a synthesizer filter is designed to impart a unique character to the sound, and an EQ filter is more often designed to do its job inconspicuously, they are in fact the same thing.

Like synthesizer filters, EQ filters come in various types. An equalizer can combine several regions or bands of filters within a single processor, and most do. That smiley face on your car stereo is really seven or more bandpass filters with fixed bandwidths and center frequencies. Because the sliders give obvious visual feedback, this is known as a graphic equalizer (see Fig. 1). Professional graphic EQs offer 30 or 31 bands, each affecting a range of one-third of an octave. Such devices are standard equipment in sound reinforcement, as they give the engineer easy and direct control over any frequencies that start to feed back during performance. A skilled front-of-house engineer can listen to a room and visualize the graphic EQ's curve before touching a control.

image of Sony equalizer window with virtual knobs

FIG. 2: A multiband equalizer’s lowest and highest bands often default to high- and lowpass filters, respectively.

Although graphic EQs are also found in studios, a more common design includes four to seven bands of different types. Software EQs often allow the user to disable unused bands to conserve resources or to change filter types for each band. Although each band is technically a filter, when an engineer refers simply to “the filters,” she's probably talking about the first and last bands, which are often fixed or defaulted as high- and lowpass filters, respectively (see Fig. 2). In addition to variable cutoff frequency, filters normally offer variable slope, which refers to the steepness of the filter. The slope could be continuously variable, or it might be adjustable in increments of 6 dB up to 24 or even 32 dB per octave. In the latter case, the term pole is typically used for each 6 dB increment — a 24 dB-per-octave slope would be a 4-pole filter.

Filters are most often used simply to restrict the bandwidth of a track. After all, if you're recording piccolo, anything below 500 Hz is by definition not part of the piccolo's sound. Filtering the low end reduces bleed from other instruments, helps mitigate any mechanical noises around the mic, and helps prevent environmental sounds such as air-conditioning and electrical hum from accumulating on multiple tracks. Filtering the high end of a kick drum reduces bleed from the snare and cymbals, keeping the kick track as clean and isolated as possible (see Web Clip 1).

Engaging both high- and lowpass filters creates a bandpass filter. Although on some EQs the filters have limited range, many EQs allow the high- and lowpass filters to cover most if not all of the audio range. Such an EQ would enable you to place the two filters very close to each other, creating the standard “telephone” filter that's used on so many lead vocals and drum loops (seeWeb Clip 2).

Often the top and bottom bands of an equalizer can be switched from high- and lowpass mode to a shelving mode. A shelving filter boosts everything above (or below) the cutoff frequency by an equal amount — its effect does not increase with frequency (see Fig. 3). The treble and bass controls on your home stereo are most likely shelving filters with a fixed corner frequency. On an EQ, shelving filters ordinarily offer a variable corner frequency, but their use is essentially the same — to boost or cut “the bass” or “the treble” of a track or mix. For example, a high shelving filter would be just the thing to add sizzle to a synth pad or string ensemble (see Web Clip 3). Shelving filters may offer control over only the corner frequency and amount of boost or attenuation, or they may also allow the user to adjust the slope of the transition band.

screenshot image of Digirack

FIG. 3: A shelving filter’s effect is not progressive like that of a lowpass or highpass filter. Instead, it boosts all frequencies above (or below) its corner frequency equally.

The remaining bands of equalization are ordinarily made up of bandpass/band-reject filters, which do exactly as their names suggest, affecting a range of frequencies. The affected range is defined by a center frequency and bandwidth. Bandpass filters are used for a great variety of purposes, and some sounds may require the use of several bands. Unlike those found in a synthesizer, however, an EQ's bandpass filters do not block all frequencies outside the band, but rather provide a boost or cut within the band without affecting other frequencies. The alternative name peak/notch filter is arguably more precise.

The most flexible bandpass filters are called parametric, meaning simply that each of their parameters (frequency, bandwidth, and gain) is independently adjustable. A band whose controls are not fully independent — for instance, one whose bandwidth is linked to its center frequency — may be called quasi- or semiparametric.

In principle, the use of a bandpass filter is quite simple: boost what you like, cut what you don't. In practice, this takes a skilled ear and refined judgment. A good way to develop your ear is to “sweep” the EQ. Boost a band as much as you can, and narrow its bandwidth as far as you can. If the EQ provides a graphic display, you will have created a very sharp spike. Now slowly raise and lower the band's frequency, listening carefully. At some point, you will hear either an attractive or an unpleasant portion of the track jump out at you. Note that in a host-based DAW, latency may cause you to overshoot the target frequency, so take your time zeroing in.

Once you've found a key frequency band, adjust the amount of boost or cut and the bandwidth to a more appropriate level — no matter how attractive the frequency, you probably don't want the band maxed out. Repeat this for as many bands as needed.

It's common practice to rely on cutting bands when possible, for reasons of gain staging and filter character. When boosting a band, make sure the increased gain does not distort the subsequent circuit. If the EQ provides output meters, pay attention to them. Also listen for the edgy sound of phase distortion, and consider whether a complementary cut in a similar sound would serve your purpose as well. For example, when a kick drum and bass part are getting in each other's way, a wise engineer looks first to trim away part of each to let the other shine through.

The term Q is sometimes substituted for bandwidth or slope. You may remember this as the term for resonance in a synthesizer filter, and in an EQ filter, it means essentially the same thing. However, EQ filters are more typically (though not always) crafted without resonant peaks even at very steep slopes and narrow bandwidths. Remember that a high Q value counterintuitively means a narrow bandwidth or steep slope.

Whatever EQs you have at your disposal, whether software or hardware, no matter the design, these essential principles hold true. Get to know the sound of different band types, slopes, and bandwidths, and tune your ear to pick out the good and bad frequency components. Listen, experiment, and listen some more, and you'll be a master of timbre in no time

“We are currently formulating a comprehensive guideline for concerts. “Until then, concerts of such nature are banned,” State executive councilor Dr Ismail Salleh, taken from The Star Online 29 August 2008.

Semoga kita kearah kebaikan.

Big voice, even bigger dream

Burlesque
BURLESQUE starts off with glitter and promises but ends up being a mildly entertaining film about going for one's dreams.
Ali (Christina Aguilera) is a small-town girl with a big voice who decides to leave her boring job in Iowa and head to the bright lights in Los Angeles to follow her dreams. When she stumbles upon The Burlesque Lounge, a majestic but troubled theatre home to an inspiring cabaret, Ali is instantly mesmerised by the entertainment. She manages to get a job as a cocktail waitress from Tess (Cher), the club's owner and headliner. Supported by a string of gorgeous women with outrageous costumes and sexy choreography, Ali vows to be a part of Tess's entourage someday.
The plucky blonde becomes entangled with the charms of Jack (Cam Gigandet), a bartender and fellow musician; builds friendship with featured dancer Georgia (Julianne Hough) and finds an enemy in the troubled, jealous dancer Nikki (Kirsten Bell). With the help of sharp-witted stage manager Sean (Stanley Tucci), Ali makes her way from the bar to the stage.
Standing out with her spectacular voice, Tess's new found favourite restores The Burlesque Lounge to its former glory - not before the charismatic entrepreneur Marcus Gerber comes with an enticing proposal.
Written and directed by Steven Antin, the film captures the essence of the timeless world of burlesque, a musical and theatrical entertainment that involves parody and grotesque exaggeration. After the 20th century, burlesque has often been associated with stripping, remaining a misconception till today. In Antin's Burlesque, the risqué elements are evident throughout the film in bits and pieces but never venturing beyond a cheeky suggestion or double layered dialogue.
Although pre-dominantly a film about finding fame and love, the sub-plot of the film also involves the crafty reality of real estate. Tess and her ex husband, Vince (Peter Gallagher) face closure of their beloved Burlesque if they don't settle their payments. Marcus is the crooked real estate mogul who wants to buy Tess out, but she refuses. Only Ali's signature soulful singing might save the lounge's future unless, the young woman herself is bought over by the suave realtor's affections.
Musically, the songs featured in the film are lively yet easily forgettable, other than Cher's You Haven't Seen The Last Of Me, which won the best song award at the Golden Globes recently. The other songs the sexy girls dance and lip synch to are catchy but not the kind that makes one want to listen to after the film is over.
Although it is a frivolous and fun film, Burlesque lacks the pizazz of Chicago or the big time creativity of Moulin Rouge.
The well-timed songs injected into the film create a musical-life atmosphere and Aguilera, as the only singing girl besides resident diva Tess, lends a dramatic touch to the film. Cher is the perfect mistress for this lounge, portraying the embodiment of female empowerment throughout.
The supporting actresses look good on screen but play little part in adding value to the film. Aguilera is not the greatest actress but pulls of her alter-ego Ali well enough. The chemistry between her and barman-musician Jack was one of the more entertaining scenes in the film.
Burlesque will be screening in cinemas nationwide starting Feb 17.

How to Operate a DJ Mixer

A DJ mixer is the most important piece of hardware that a DJ can have. A basic DJ mixer controls the volume and equalizer for a given track. Learning to use a DJ mixer properly is every bit as complex as learning how to play an instrument. It requires practice and timing to ensure that your DJ set will be flawless. Once you figure out how each knob and slider works, you can be mixing tracks in no time.

  • 1
Use the crossfader to fade between one track and another. The crossfader is typically located on the bottom-center of the DJ mixer. When it is all the way to the left, it is only playing the track that is on the left turntable. When it is all the way to the right, it is only playing the track that is on the right turntable. If the slider is in the middle, then it will play both tracks at the same time.

  • 2
Use the equalizer to adjust which frequencies go through on its respective track. The equalizer on the DJ mixer consists of low, mid and high knobs. A DJ mixer usually contains two sets of EQ knobs, one for each respective track. To make a more balanced mix, you must adjust the EQ accordingly. For instance, many DJs will turn down the lows on one track while boosting the lows on another. This allows the track to be less bass heavy and will be more pleasing to the ear. Use your headphones to listen to what your mix will sound like before you play it for everyone else to hear.

  • 3
Use the vertical volume faders to adjust the volume for a given track. If a track is too quiet, slide the volume fader up so it can be heard in your mix. You can also use the gain knobs to adjust volume if you want to keep both volume faders parallel.

  • 4
Press the headphone monitoring selector button to preview the cued track through your headphones. The "Cue 1" button usually corresponds to the track on the left channel while the "Cue 2" button corresponds with the track on the right channel.

    Do Men Prefer Virgins?

One of the most interesting quandaries to ever surface from the dating pool is whether or not dating a virgin is still a man's preference. In a world where sexual promiscuity is rampant and the practicing of abstinence has all but died out, just about everyone is having sex -- so much so that deciding between virgins and non-virgins almost seems useless.

That is, until you look at data that suggests that many men want a "nice" (read: virtuous) woman to settle down with. But if sex before marriage is a standard practice among today's generation, is finding a virgin that important, let alone possible?

    What Men Want

I decided to conduct one of my own surveys amid 25 men, in which I asked them to state their preference between virgins and non-virgins, with regards to long-term relationships. Results concluded that 14 men, if given a choice, would prefer virgins, while the remaining 11 preferred either non-virgins or were indifferent altogether. Incidentally, all the men who participated are single and have had sex with at least two different women.

While my findings are far from scientific and may not necessarily convey the sentiments of the general male population, there's a real irony here considering that all the men surveyed want the purest of the pure for marriage, yet they themselves have already experienced the pleasures of the female flesh.

    Society's Double Standard

The problem with most men is that they want to have their cake and eat it to. They want to sleep with as many women as they like, yet frown on women who do the same.

And therein lies the problem: Guys find women for one-night stands, but they're extremely reluctant to settle down with women whose sexual history is just as colorful as their own.

So how is one supposed to find a virgin when "holding out" is considered passé, and women are pressured to put out?

    Picking One Over The Other

Even though such questions are often asked, it's obvious that dating a non-virgin is not a bad thing. Pressures and one-night stands aside, there are plenty of couples out there nowadays who come to a mutual decision to make love before marriage (if marriage is even part of the equation anymore). Sex is not a dirty activity for dirty people; it's an expression of love in its most natural form. You can't fault any woman for wanting that.

Whether she's been around or not, every woman has her disadvantages..But everyone's entitled to their beliefs, and virgins and non-virgins both present a unique set of advantages and disadvantages. In figuring out who your ideal woman is, you may want to keep the following pros and cons in mind:

    An Experienced Woman

Pros: Dating a non-virgin eliminates the need to pretend you're a saint, since some women may find men who have slept around a turnoff. And if you're both sexually experienced, you can take your sex life to a higher level and avoid those awkward beginning stages.

Cons: Guys who are virgins or have less experience than their girlfriends may suffer from a bruised ego due to the woman's high level of experience. They may also find it a turnoff if they're looking for a woman with mutual values. Even if you don't get into specific numbers this is a great example of how one's past can interfere with present relationships.

    A Virgin

Pros: Some men take pride in being the only man their woman has been with; it's a territorial thing, I guess. The guys get to play teacher and hopefully customize their woman's performance to suit their needs.

In yet another attempt to prove their manliness, men often feel the need to be the greatest in bed. And if she's a virgin, then there's less pressure to perform a certain way. Since she doesn't really know what great sex feels like, you can take your time and enjoy the moment without the intense pressure of having to be the best.

Cons: If there's one problem many guys have had when dating a virgin, it's that she probably won't give in (at least not early on). And if you're not a virgin and have already had a taste of what the pie is all about, it's going to be hard a lot of the time (and I mean that exactly the way it sounds).

As well, even if you are her first, chances are that she won't be as great as you'd imagine because, well, she has no experience. Unforgettable oral sex is unlikely; let alone a woman who is willing to try absolutely anything in bed. Of course, there are the few who are wild from the start, but chances are that if you do find her, you'll always wonder if she's being truthful.

    Think Carefully

In pondering over her sexual past:

  • Don't let her previous experience (or inexperience) be the only deciding factor of your potential future together.

  • Don't make generalizations about her based on her past sexual encounters, or lack thereof.

  • Don't assume you have the right to know everything about her previous love affairs.

  • Ask yourself how much of an impact her sexual history will have on your relationship.

  • Choose Wisely

Sex is a major component in most relationships. And part of finding Miss Right includes being with a person who has the same sexual mentality and physicality you do, regardless of their saintly or sordid past.

Topless Photos Of Selena Gomez Up For Grabs

    Innocent till proven guilty
    Innocent till proven guilty
Oh no, what's the world coming to? If reports are to be believed, the seemingly sweet Selena Gomez isn't so innocent after all.
Rumours are rife that topless photos of Selena Gomez are being offered to media outlets with the highest bids.
Gossip blog Hollyscoop claimed that they were approached with topless photos of theA Year Without Rain singer but because they couldn't determine whether she was under 18 at the time the photos (snapped with a handphone) were taken, they would not publish them.
According to Hollyscoop, the photos of Selena were "taken by someone else" inside a bathroom and she's posing in front of a closed door. The singer had shorter hair in the photos. So far, Selena's reps have not responded to these allegations.
